Dear BCNPA

I wanted to write to tell of my positive experience of having a nurse practitioner as my primary health care provider. About 5 years ago my husband and I found ourselves without a doctor when our wonderful family doctor decided to give up her private practice. My husband and I both have chronic health issues and also provide care for my aging mother who lives nearby.

For us to be without a family doctor was devastating. Our family needs prescriptions for medication and medical equipment and occasional referrals to specialists. During the time we were without a doctor I developed an acute condition that became chronic because of bad advice (“there is no treatment for that”) dispensed by a walk-in clinic doctor.

Through my work I found discovered the possiblity of receiving primary medical care through a community health clinic, so we registered at the one in our area of Vancouver. Since then we have been very happy with our medical care and my mother has since switched from her doctor at the other end of Vancouver to our NP at the community health clinic. Our NP knows how to listen. And not only is she very compassionate, but she is very thorough and efficient. She can spend longer with us if the need arises. Plus, with our doctor we often had to wait a month for an appointment. At our clinic we generally wait only a few days. And any documentation we need is always done in an effective and timely way, which makes all the difference when you are dealing with insurance companies. It’s a fabulous way to receive health care and I recommend it highly to others.

Thank you, Name Withheld
